Update on the Loss of Grizzly 399 and Her Cub Spirit

Today, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) confirmed that Grizzly 399’s body has been recovered. It's in decent condition and is being treated with the respect and dignity she deserves. While there are no current plans for what will be done with her remains, USFWS will collaborate with the National Park Service (NPS) to explore options. Thankfully, USFWS assured that discarding her in a landfill, as is often done with other wildlife, would not be an acceptable outcome, given her immense legacy.

As for her cub, Spirit, an officer spotted Spirt last night running up a hill near the scene. USFWS has decided not to attempt capturing or collaring Spirit for now. They’ll continue to monitor the area where 399 was hit to ensure Spirit stays away from the road, but they believe Spirit is uninjured and capable of surviving independently. For now, they will let Spirit continue its journey without interference.

Grizzly 399, you will be deeply missed. We hope your legacy continues through Spirit. Make your momma proud, Spirit—we’ll be watching and rooting for you.
